Heron And Pond
A graceful heron standing by the edge of a pond in Florida.
Herons are long legged freshwater and coastal birds with 64 recognized species. Although herons resemble birds in some other families, such as storks, ibises, spoonbills and cranes, they differ from these in flying with their necks retracted, not outstretched. The feathers of the herons are soft and the plumage is usually blue, black, brown, gray, or white and can often be strikingly complex.
