Description:

This series of work came out of a search for a new way of working. I had been questioning and seeking a relevancy to what I was doing, why I was doing it, and what it was I was trying to say. I have fancied myself a symbolist for a long time. Working in a way that was highly orchestrated and deliberate, down to the brush stroke. While I still believe and hold that art is a search for truth and meaning through creative expression and exploration, and that it is a way of communicating these truths and ideas,; I began to feel the need for a more free and intuitive way of working.
Thus, I began my search by first looking at what had been done before me. Way before me. I began to look at, and research cave paintings. I had always been interested in this work not only from the artistic point of view, but the historical and anthropological as well. I had always identified with this work, one: because these were my artistic ancestors , my grandfathers and grandmothers whose paint still flows through my veins, and upon whose foundation all art has been build; and two: because even at that time there were people who were searching for a way of understanding and finding a “truth” to this world through art. In my research of these works, I came across the fact that a lot of these pieces were created by utilizing the “natural” formations already present within or on the rock surface, and that with the paint or by carving away a little bit of rock the artists popped out or enhanced these features to recreate and represent the figures and animals that surrounded them. It reminded me of when I was a child lying on my back in the grass and sunshine; watching the clouds roll by, and picking out familiar shapes of dogs, rabbits, cars, tennis shoes, and cartoon characters.
In a not so really long stretch back to the childhood that this discovery reminded me of, I also began to think about the art forms that interested me as a child, and from which I obtained the desire to create art of my own. These were of course cartoons and comics, and should come as no real surprise. I started to think in particular about the old style animation cells in which different paintings on acetate, i.e. the background , then characters, then foreground, were all layered and then photographed for the final animation. This layering in particular interested me, and the way in which it added depth and dimension to a relatively flat medium.
Here is where I started to create. I began by combining these two ideas: the finding and creating of familiar forms in random and abstract backgrounds, and layering these finding in multiple levels to create depth and dimension. These current pieces are my results thus far. They may be little snippets of life truths and meaning revealed, or the subconscious ramblings of someone who never really grew up, has a tendency to over think things and become obsessive. Who knows. All that I do know is that I have enjoyed making them, and I hope that you will enjoy them in some way as well.
