Historic Saddlery Shop - Montana Territory
Interior of Joseph Sullivan's Montana Saddle and Harness Shop.
He was the longest running and perhaps best saddle and harness maker in the old west. He plyed his trade for 60 years and outfitted everyone from Canadian Mounties to cowboys throughout the west and cowpunchers on the northern ranges. He was a friend of Charles Russel, the famous western artist, and a friend to open-range frontier cattlemen.
The death of Joseph Sullivan marked the severing of another of Montana's links to her colorful and picturesque past. When he built saddles, he built them to last. Joe Sullivan, one of the last craftsmen of this historic era, may be gone, but his legacy still lives on in the shop that he spent his entire life in.
