My friends Shar Pei puppy on a hot day in June. The ice lolly help his teething as well as being a cooling treat. He is 10 weeks old in this photograph.
The Shar Pei breed comes from the Guangdong province of China. The original Shar-Pei from China looked very different from the breed now popular in the West.
The Chinese Shar-Pei is a large dog with wrinkled skin. Puppies have more wrinkles than adults and slowly lose their wrinkles as they get older.
The Shar-Pei is very loyal to its handler. Intelligent playful, active, dominant, and brave, It bonds with its family, but is not unfriendly toward strangers. The Chinese Shar-Pei is easy-going, calm, independent and devoted. It makes a delightful companion and a good watchdog.
Shar Pei were named in 1978 as one of the world's rarest dog breeds by TIME magazine and the Guinness World Records. The American Kennel Club did not recognize the breed until 1991.
