Human skin. Light micrograph of a cross-section through a sample of skin from a human finger. Across top are layers of stratified squamous epithelium forming the outer skin layers. Below that is the basal layer where epithelial cells form and move upwards. Below that is the dermis, a layer of fibrous connective tissue that supports and nourishes the epidermis. Magnification x50 when printed at 10 centimetres tall.
