Mildew. Coloured Scanning Electron Micrograph of hyphae and ripe asci of the leaf mildew Sphaerotheca sp. The hyphae are the tangled filaments which make up a fungal colony. Asci (singular ascus) are the aerial, club-shaped spore-forming bodies seen here. Inside an ascus, eight ascospores develop and are violently discharged when ripe. The ascospores are carried away by air currents and may produce a new fungal colony if they land on appropriate material. Sphaerotheca species are plant parasites, various species invading the leaves and buds of dandelions, hops, gooseberries and roses. Magnification x300 at 5x7cm size. x1950 at 10x8ins
