I Can See Freedom
Ian Duncan MacDonald
Mixed Media - Mixed
Two thousand people from all over the world have looked closely at this image in my website. Of the more than 1,200 images I have in my Fine Art America site, this is by far the most popular. It is more a wall sculpture than a painting. It consists of two fibre board surfaces seperated by one inch cedar stripping. The bars in the window are real bars. The eye is painted on a sheet of glass. The idea is - on which side of the bars is freedom. Prisoners have scrawled rough graffiti about freedom on this side of the wall.
Interestingly, at least to me, this painting was removed from an exhibition for fear that American tourists would find the quotations on it offensive. These "freedom" quotations are by such noteables as Thomas Jefferson, Benjamin Franklin, Jack Kennedy, etc. When it is exhibited, it usually attracts a crowd around of people reading the quotations. It makes you think about the freedoms we take for granted and what the freedoms we have sacrificed for security in what is essentially an insecure world.
