I Have Walked
Painting - Aquarelle
In my childhood it has become a custom for me and some friends to go out to Ekeberg on Sunday afternoon . All the long week we rejoiced this afternoon we would spend in the open, to the fragrant cherry twigs we were to break , the silje flutes we should twist the sparkling rock crystals we would find, and the sweet strawberries we'd gather . When we got older , we let both Nigel and wild cherry stand alone , but sometimes we went out , and at Ekeberg farm's fields could hunt go cheerfully by Apollo butterfly with its beautiful wings, or we tumbled us merry with insekthn in the deserted own accord about the decrepit beacon to capture the chivalrous machaon , which by its light flush more than once put our patience severely tested. What in particular did these the regions so appealing to me , however, was neither the fragrant cherry , or the melancholic silje flute, neither the purpurflekkede apollo or the sulfur-yellow machaon , but the romantic mystery which during the first childhood memories dawned on me these places , the desire pleve something supernatural , the idea of all the glory that was hiding inside the rock, and on those mysterious beings who , according to legend, was found in the rock deep.
The stories about Ekeberg King , the underground and their rock castle has more and more silenced , but the occasional what I heard in my childhood , yet alive in my memory , and I have here sought to refresh .
For half a hundred years back in time [1 ] was Ekeberg not cleared and settled as now , it was overgrown with woods and thickets , and from the city so you do not other people homes there than Ekeberg farm's old house on the hill , and a small red cottage down the hill on the left side of the road , where it turns up right at Ekeberg farm . It was called bend . On this site you can see now there was a stately building , where it's summer dance and forfriskningslokale for the spaserlystne "young ruler monkeys " , as in the first summer after going out "to hear the cuckoo ."
Here bend in the little red cottage stayed in the old time I speak of , a poor Basket wife , as miserable enough settled through the world. Once she had been gone to fetch a vending water, sat a big fat toad in the path for her.
" Go out of my way , I'll be the midwife for you , when you come in childbirth , " she said jokingly to the toad , which immediately began to pull himself out of the way so fast it would go.
Some time after when wicker woman an autumn evening was come home from town and sat in front of the chimney and spun , came a stranger to her .
"Listen ," said he , " my Goody will soon be , remembered does not have long left . Would you help her when she makes childbirth, as you have promised , you shall not regret it. "
"Oh, God help me so true, " said the woman , "it can not be enough , because I do not understand anything about it."
" Yes, you can probably do it, because you promised her, " said the man .
The wife could simply not remember that she had promised to be a midwife , and she said to him, but the man replied :
"Yes , I promised you did , the toad , sitting in your way when you went for water, it was my Goody . Would you help her , " persisted the man, who she now realized could be no other than Ekeberg King , " and you will never regret it, I shall deserved you well for it, but you must not squander the money I give you, you have to give them away if someone asks you , and do not need to talk about it, yes you Do not so much as the laughing about it to any human being even . "
" No, lower ! " she said , " I can probably tie , and tell me just when his wife gets hurt, then I get help as best I can. "
There was a time , then came the same man one night in the basket wife and asked her to follow . She stood up and took on , he did occur and she followed, and before she knew where they were or how it happened , she was inside the rock, where the queen lay in bed and was in labor . There was a living room , which was stately , mostly as a slottssal and hamper the wife thought she 'd never been anywhere where there were so fine .
But when they had entered , put the man on a chair and pinched his hands on his knees , and when the man sitting so , a maternity wife can not be redeemed , it did hamper his wife very well. Therefore tried both she and the Queen to give him lots of errands and told him to go soon after and soon after one another , but as he sat there he sat , and he did not move from the spot . Finally got the midwife a whim.
" Now she's released , " she said to the man. " Hosdan it happened ? " he cried , and was so astonished that he let go . At the moment, let the Christian woman hand on the Queen, and immediately she was released.
While the man was out to get hot wash water to the child, said the midwife to cart cone :
" My husband likes you enough you but when you go, so he shoots at you anyway , because he can not break arta , so you must hurry and snap behind the door in the same you go, so he hits you. "
When the child was washed, adorned and dressed , the Queen sent her into the kitchen to retrieve an ointment jar to lubricate your eyes on it. But such a kitchen ware and such , she had never seen to make . In the ranks were lined up the most magnificent dishes and plates, and ceiling hung pans , kettles and kj , all of pure silver and so polished that it shone all around the walls.
But no one can thought how astonished she was when she saw that her own maid stood there and painted groats on a hand grinder. She took a pair of scissors and cut a Bung out of her skirt without her noticing it , and she hid .
When she had finished and were leaving , she well remembered what the midwife had said , and slipped behind the door. In the same shot king is a fiery broom after her , then fire himself out it.
" Did I hit you? " he screamed .
" Oh no , " replied the woman.
" It was good! " he shouted .
The sun was well into the floor when hamper his wife came home , but the girl who always complained that she was dull and had pain across the lower back , lay groaning and slept yet. She woke her and asked.
" Where have you been her last night? "
"I mother ? " said the girl , " I have nowhere been there I know , without here in bed . "
"Yeah , when do I know better , " said the woman , " this lumpy , I cut out the skirt of the mountain in the night , you see it fit? But so are the youth nowadays , in previous times read people 's evening prayer and sang a hymn before they went to bed , that such witchcraft should not have any power , and I will also teach you to take the Lord for eyes , for you can well understand that you have to be dull and klein and get hurt over his back , and I rather do not get great benefit to you , when you serve them at night and my day. "
From the time selling his wife had been a midwife for the Queen, she found every morning a cluster of silver outside their door , and her circumstances improved, so she soon was a timid wife . But then it happened once that a very poor wife carried on and complained about his need for her.
" Stuff and nonsense ! " she said , "it can not be that dangerous , when I just wanted to, there was no case for me to help you, for what a man sows he shall reap , and I've probably helped it going for me. " But after that day , she found not a penny outside its door , the money she had received , was like blown away , and she had left to take the basket on her arm and walking to town in sunshine and rain. -
But Ekeberg King did not always his wife's errands , during the time he was also in their own and rescued the girls from town, on Sundays and holy days wandered about in the underbrush and ravines or went into the woods nke berries. Most often he was looking for as an ugly shriveled man with red eyes , but when he would make happiness, he accepted Bernt Ankers form and appeared as a beautiful , like a little old man with the star on his chest. But this was just hallucinations , he was and it was old ugly , red-eyed ogre , and it could probably be felt in the offspring , because his wife always got the toughest and nastiest changelings , forslukne screaming tacks with large heads and red eyes , as parents sought to be rid of as soon as they could, and therefore they were underground , the equivalent kongepars obedient servants and subjects , sent out.
In that time, namely the underground in Ekeberg a naughty reputation that they stole the beautiful and kind human children in Greenland , Enerhaugen and especially in the Old Town , and allow such substitutions instead , and this child theft and barnebytteriet went so far that they could not even come over to nurse them himself : therefore they also stole breastfeeding to them , and they often kept them forever . But it was a girl from the Old Town which they had received, she was luckier . She had been rescued about a year and have been breastfeeding for a beautiful human child the underground had stolen, but then she dropped out . Whether it was because it was called after her , or she put their shoes backwards , or she slip of the tongue , or she found a sewing needle in her shift her , I can not remember , it was enough , she got out, and since she told both far and wide about how noble and that grand it was in the park, how kind people there had been with her, how well they had talked to her to get her to join , and the sweet young she was breastfed . Every morning said the underground , she would smear the child's eyes with an ointment that she should take a jar that hung in the kitchen , but they added , she had to take good care to get close to their own with it. She could not imagine what it would be , the child had the loveliest eyes anyone could see , and once when the woman was in the kitchen, took her coat and a bit of ointment of his right eye .
A half a year after she had come from the underground , she in and buy something Bjerke Busch 's general store on the corner of Great Street and Market Square . And there stood bergkjerringen she had been breastfeeding at , at the counter and stole rice from the tray and it did not seem that anyone noticed or saw her .
" Good day , mother should I take Jer here? " said the girl , and greeted her, " how 's it going with the baby ? "
" Can you see me ? " the woman asked astonished .
" Well, if I could not see Jer then? " said the girl .
" What 's that for an eye you see me ? " asked the underground .
"Wait a minute, that 's about it right , " replied the girl , and the clip with eyes.
Then spit the underground eye on her, and from the time that the girl either her or someone else with it , for she was and was blind in the right eye .
Though it is still not certain lack of tykkhodete kids both in Greenland and in the Old Town , you no longer subterranean in Ekeberg blame for it. Firstly, namely information risen so high that instead rishye changelings three Thursday evenings in the garbage heap or pinch them in the nose with a fiery ten-foot pole , which was customary in those days, so let the nu mother Torgersen or another signings woman cast the child of impaired , sorcery and witchcraft , or they send one of your child's diapers Stine Wide violence , which is so wise that she reads the child's illness and fate and then decide how it should go. And second, as both Ekeberg King and the underground moved , for the eternal drumming and peel the shooting of the military during the last war , clatter of the heavy armor and baggage wagons thundered down the path of Ekeberg King's ceiling and shook his house so the silver quivering on the walls made him weary of life there. A man met him one night in 1814 with multiple load household goods and a large herd of hornless and brandete cows.
" Cross, how shall ye hen so late in this dangerous time by as much relocation goods and as big a herd then? " said the man .
"I will move to my brother in Kongsberg , for I can not endure this the shooting and judgment ringing , " said Ekeberg King , and since then he has neither been heard or asked .
