Description:
Indelible........I know...it's blue...we’ll get to that. I've gotten pretty cold in some of my winter outings. But, this day had to be one of the worst. It was TWO degrees F and the wind was blowing off of Lake Erie at a steady 30-35 mph. Because I can’t wear gloves while I am taking pictures, the wind made the skin on my knuckles feel as if it were going to split every time I closed my hand. After losing all practical use of my fingers, I headed back to my car. This group of trees and the empty patch of snow in front of it just jumped out and grabbed me. For some reason, I am always drawn to the possibility of minimalism. Freezing, I got all of my gear back out, set up my tripod and got a dozen or so shots when I noticed that the last couple images had come out blue. This is my first winter with my "new" old Nikon and, apparently, it was at or below the temperature at which this particular camera shoots nothing but blue. I packed up and went home. Of all of the pictures that I took that day, I went right to the end of the list to see these trees. Sure enough, the last two pictures had a blue cast to them. I can't explain it but, the shots without the blue cast just refused to satisfy me. The blue seemed to be a major factor in the feeling that I was getting from this image. I guess that sometimes in life things just have to be blue and you can't make the blue go away. I can't explain the feeling that I sometimes get about a picture like this one. It is as if someone else is guiding me; forcing me to make it look a certain way. I guess this is what you would call an "artistic impulse". It is the inability to do something with an image that you believe is what others want to see; the inability to pander to the masses. Instead, you just work on it hypnotically; hoping that someone out there will understand the impulse that drove you to it. I believe that when someone goes about their work in this manner, they are producing genuine art. It may not be well-received, it may even be laughed at; but, at the very least, it is something that is true to their vision. I do not get this feeling on all of my pictures, but the ones with which I do have it always seem to be my favorites. All we can hope for is that someone out there hears the same thing that we hear from a piece of our work. Every attempt at art is trying to say something. Whether or not it is heard by a significant number of people is the deciding factor in whether or not it is actually art. Nothing thrills me more than when someone tells me that they looked at one of my pictures and they were filled with a feeling of loneliness or solitude. That is all that I ever wanted from my work; to separate someone from the crowd so that they may begin to think without the constraints of social control. I will never know what they think after the feeling of solitude comes to them, but I know that they will be thoughts far deeper and more meaningful than the trivialities of our modern pop culture/iphone lifestyle.

Scott, I don't find it blue so much as a collection of cold gray tones, much like some old-school black and white film images. I appreciate the minimalism, the loneliness expressed here as the view fades toward the horizon. voted
