A friend from college days called today just to tell me she was remembering Josh and reaching out to give love... as soon as she asked what I'd been up to lately, I started singing praises of you, Linda, Alga, Ana, and Lee. The five of you have embraced me and encouraged me this year like I never imagined possible. All of you see the person I am inside... the physical distance doesn't keep us from being close (even though we haven't yet met in person)... Looking inside you through the wonderful gifts you each share means so much to me! Thank you again and again! :-)

YOU are my 2011 year-long blessing and I thank you! I'm really happy you looked at this piece because I think the message is a profound one... People often spend so much time looking at "image" and forgetting about "substance"... what's at the core of our human existence. I used to tell the young people I coached to think about what they'd do if (God forbid) they got into an accident and was disfigured... would they want to lose all their friends because they no longer fit the societal definition of beautiful?
