Iron Nail In Salt Water

Photograph - Photograph
Iron nail in salt water. Experiment to show the corrosive effects of different combinations of water and air on iron. Here the nail is in a beaker filled with salt water. Iron rusts (corrodes) in the presence of oxygen and water. Here the nail is rusting as water contains dissolved oxygen. It is also rusting than faster than it would in fresh water as salt accelerates the process of corrosion. Rust (iron oxide, brown) deposits can be seen at the bottom of the beaker.
