Photograph - Photograph
Isaac Ray (1807-1881), US psychiatrist. Ray specialised in insanity and its applications in forensic psychiatry. This discipline, of which he was one of the founders, mostly concerns the competency of a criminal to stand trial. Ray published 'A Treatise on the Medical Jurisprudence of Insanity' (1838). From 1841, Ray worked as Superintendent of the State Hospital for the Insane in Augusta, Maine, then of the Butler Hospital in Providence, Rhode Island. He retired to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in 1867. This photograph, which dates from between 1865 and 1880, is part of a collection of photographs from the Brady-Handy studio.
