Description
In the late 1950s, Americans began hearing about a slightly oversized student at Ohio State University with golden, blond hair and a unique ability to really crunch a golf ball. At age 19, just a college sophomore, Jack Nicklaus consolidated national attention when he won the 1959 United States Amateur. Two years later, in 1961, he achieved the pinnacle of amateur success by winning both the U.S. Amateur as well as the NCAA title.
Over the years, the vast majority of successful amateur golfers have crumbled under the bright lights of the professional circuit. Such was not to be the case with Jack Nicklaus, featuring raw power; he was easily the longest hitter in the game when he turned professional in 1962. This earned him the nickname The Golden Bear. A very serious student of the game, Nicklaus subsequently concentrated heavily on his short irons and putting, leading to exceptionally well-rounded, consistent golf.
Then the victories started coming. In total, world-wide, Jack Nicklaus has won over 90 golf tournaments including 71 on the PGA tour. His low-tour career scoring average of 70.96 strokes per round has led to career earnings well in excess of five million dollars. He has played on the Ryder Cup team six times and has been the captain twice. In 1990, Nicklaus began playing part-time on the Senior tour, and in 1993, he won his second U.S. Senior Open.
Many of Nicklaus most remarkable performances have come in the biggest pressure cooker tournaments. He is the all-time leader in Major championships 20 (6 Masters, 4 U.S. Opens, 3 British Opens, 5 PGA Championships and 2 U.S. Amateurs). With thunderous applause from the gallery, no one will ever forget the thrill of seeing The Golden Bear walking down the fairway toward the eighteenth green at Augusta National Golf Club as he was about to wrap up the 1986 Masters title. When he put on the Green Jacket, symbolic of the championship, at age 46, he was the oldest player ever to do so.
Jack Nicklaus was chosen PGA Player of the Year five times (1967, 1972, 1973, 1975, and 1976). In a sport where performance can be irritatingly fickle and the competition fiercely intense, the Golden Bears domination was recognized in 1988, when he was named Golfer of the Century by journalists and officials. Though some would consider golf more a game than a true athletic contest, Nicklaus success even transcended the sport as he was awarded Athlete of the Decade for the 1970s.
Over the last twenty years, Jack Nicklaus has designed many of the most challenging and beautiful golf courses in the world. A successful businessman, he has written articles on finance in which he warns investors to protect their money by investing in only what they know well.
An intense but fair competitor, one thought comes to mind when we hear the name jack Nicklaus the best golfer who ever lived!
