Description:

PD: Reproduction of ca. 1917 photograph of "Jim Thorpe " In uniform of the New York Giants baseball team, at Polo grounds. James Francis Thorpe: b.1888 d. 1953. American athlete, member of the Saux-Fox tribal nation of Oklahoma. Winner of two gold medals in the 1912 Olympics in Stockholm, Sweden. Won the pentathlon, and decathlon events, played professional baseball, and football, and excelled at all of these sports. During his sports career he suffered an insidious racial discrimination because of his Indian heritage, and was always a contention by a white Anglo-Saxon dominated sports venue. His gold medals were withheld when his citizenship was questioned, along with other petty issues of his ability to compete in the Olympics, It was not until 1983 that an enlightened, and responsible olympic organization awarded his medals posthumously. Irony of ironies, it was not until 1924 that all american Indians were granted citizenship by the United States. A poll of sports fans was conducted by ABC sports, Jim Thorpe was voted the the greatest athlete of the 20th century out of 15 other athletes, including Muhammad Ali, Babe Ruth, Jesse Owens, Jack Nicklaus, and Michael Jordan. .
