James Gillray (1756-1815), British caricaturist. Gillray was mainly active in London from the 1780s to 1810, producing a large number of caricatures and satirical artworks that were displayed in the shop window of his print seller, a Miss Hannah Humphrey. The topics were mainly social and political, and his caricatures have become very collectible. As his eyesight began to fail he became insane from 1811, dying a few years later. This engraving by the British engraver Charles Turner (1774-1857) is based on a miniature self-portrait by Gillray. It was published in London in April 1819.
