Description
James Nasmyth (1808-1890), Scottish engineer. Nasmyth was the son of a landscape painter in Edinburgh. Although his formal schooling finished when he was 12, Nasmyth watched local engineers at work to understand their processes. After making his own brass foundry, Nasmyth obtained a post in London and began to design machine tools. Fascinated with steam engines, he went on to design the first steam hammer. A few years later he patented it and made his fortune. He retired at 48 to become an astronomer. Artwork from the 6th volume (second period of 1890) of the French popular science weekly 'La Science Illustree'.
