Description
Japanese tapestry featuring a flying crane over a stormy sea. A thousand tails tortoise is seen resting on a rock. According to Buddhism creed, the crane represents the heaven, while the tortoise represents the earth. At the entrance of Buddhist temples, frequently is seen a bronze sculpture representing a crane riding on the back of a tortoise. A large mon is featured on the reverse side. The Fukusa tapestry was used traditionally for gift wrapping in imperial Japan.
