Hanne Lore Koehler
Painting - Watercolor
This celebrity portrait was painted in my studio by looking at a photo as if the Prime Minister were actually sitting in my studio. A candid photo of Canada's Prime Minister, the right honourable Jean Chretien, star of the political stage, with his wife was commissioned by the proud grandmother of two children who were chosen to present gifts to the stately couple at a local function. This is just a portion of the complete painting she commissioned me to paint. To see the entire painting, please go to my website: http://www.koehlerart.com/gallery6.htm.
Contemporary portraiture, like today's lifestyle, is becoming less formal and rigid now that a subject can easily be captured in a natural unpretentious composition with the aid of photography. A candid portrait such as this of a head of state can humanize the position. Sadly, in his youth, Chrétien suffered an attack of Bell's palsy, permanently leaving the left side of his face partially paralyzed. He used this to his advantage, however, in his first Liberal leadership campaign, saying that he was "One politician who didn't talk out of both sides of his mouth." Respectfully, the opposition did not mention that he is also deaf in one ear. The right honourable Jean Chrétien was Prime Minister of Canada from November 4, 1993, to December 12, 2003.
