Jet Stream Clouds
Photograph - Photograph
Jet stream clouds over eastern Canada, seen from orbit. North is towards bottom. This band of high- altitude clouds runs from bottom right to centre. The jet stream is a narrow band of high-speed winds found between 8-12 kilometres above the Earth. Jet stream winds are driven by the temperature differences between cold polar air and warm tropical air. They may reach speeds of up to 300 kilometres per hour. Cape Breton Island in the northern Atlantic Ocean is seen at lower centre. Photographed from the Space Shuttle Discovery during mission STS-39 in May 1991.
