Description
John Burroughs (1837-1921), US naturalist, author and essayist. Burroughs was an important figure in the development of the US conservation movement. Often writing about his native Catskill Mountains, his influences included Wordsworth and Emerson. He published over 23 volumes of nature essays between 1867 and 1922, the final two appearing posthumously. These essays were popular with the public, and he came to be seen as the 'Grand Old Man of Nature'. This photograph, from the period 1905 to 1945, is from the Harris and Ewing Collection, which mostly consists of photographs taken in Washington DC, USA.
