John Gladstone (1827-1902). 19th Century artwork by Leslie Ward ('Spy') of the British chemist John Hall Gladstone. Gladstone was President of the Physical Society from 1874 to 1876, and the Chemical Society from 1877-1879. He is best known for his publication on bromination of rubber, and also pioneered work in optics and spectroscopy. This image was originally published in Vanity Fair magazine, in 1891.
