A photo taken by Nava Thompson of a yellow Hollyhock taken at Peal Mansion in Bentonville, Arkansas. The Hollyhock immediately takes me back to my simple childhood days at my grandmother's farm. The Hollyhocks grew on the east side of the house--and I remember standing there in the early morning looking up at the flowers towering above me---watching the bees swarm around them. The old farm had so many things to enjoy and I loved it all. It was fun to drink cold water out of a deep well, help feed the chickens and gather the eggs, follow my grandmother down in the dank celler to pick out big jars of green beans and pickled peaches, seeing the cows, horses and pigs. They had a big garden and a smoke house. My uncles built the house--and they were farmers--not builders--however, the house still stands today. The house has been empty for many years---and the same old rock steps lead up to the small wooden porch where the screen door could be opened to go inside. Would I go through that gate--and along the path that leads to the rock steps--and go back in that little house to see and possibly hear all the activity that will forever be a wonderful memory for me? Probably not---I think I will just remember things the way they were---the smell of a wood stove burning---scratch biscuits--homemade sausage--sugar cookies--laughter--and small talk without the distraction of TV and interenet. Wow--love and miss those wonderful times.
