Description
For the longest time, wooden Victorians were painted white with green shutters. This practice began back in 1893 at the Columbian Exposition in Chicago. It was known as the White City because all the buildings were painted white. Classicism was in the air again. A few short years before this, Victorian architecture was very colorful. I believe this was influenced by an interest in the exotic Middle East and beyond. Think of Persian rugs. Since there was no color photography in the 19th century, they rediscovered this lost art for color by chipping away the undercoats.
This photo was taken during a very hot Fourth of July back in the 1980's.
