Just Hatched - Killdeer
Photograph - Photography
This Killdeer just hatched on the day that I took this photograph. Killdeer are precocial birds, meaning they are relatively mature and mobile from the moment they hatch. This little guy kept running to me and would lay against my leg. I would put him back in the nest but as soon as I sat down again he was off and running right back to rest against my leg. After a half dozen times of this I left the nest area so this little guy wouldn't imprint on me. This was about a week ago. I saw the little guys running around in the field just yesterday and they are doing fine : ) They look pretty funny with their long legs and little fluffy bodies be-bopping around. I can't get a good photograph of them now as they scatter everywhere as soon as they see us, with the parent Killdeer keeping themselves between us and the babies. It's pretty impressive how the adult Killdeer protect their young.
