Description:

This young brown pelican was at the seawall in Bay St. Louis, Ms. begging the fisherman and his wife who were throwing small bait fish its way. A common bird along the southern coasts of North America. The Brown Pelican feeds by plunge-diving from flight, either at a shallow angle or as they skim the water. They may also dive steeply from high overhead. The adult Brown Pelican is silvery gray with a whitish head and neck. Prior to nesting, the hindneck of adults becomes dark reddish. This is why in summer months you will see Brown pelicans more often with the reddish neck and in winter months, white and yellow colored heads and necks.
