Khajuraho Tantrik Dancer Applying Make-up
Painting - Water Color, Pencil & Ink On Handmade Paper
Part of an epic from the 9th & 11th Centuries of Chandela dynasty in India, is an example of Indo-Aryan architecture & exquisite sculpture with the medieval touch.
Khajuraho is famous for its erotic yet aesthete temples of Indo-Aryan architecture depicting KamaSutras.
The Chandela rulers built these famous temples between 950-1050 . Originally around 85 temples were built, and only 22 of them survive today.
Khajuraho temples are centered on women. A depiction of womankind, her myriad moods, various facets and her sexuality. The carvings depict woman writing letter, applying makeup, combing her tresses, dancing, and playing with her newborn. Innocent, coquettish, smiling, seductive, passionate and beautiful, depicted in intricate carvings, sharply etched and sculpted with extraordinary skills.
Khajuraho after Tajmahal (one of the seven wonders of the world) is the most frequently visited monument in India by Indian & foreign tourists.
According to Alexander Cunningham, Khajuraho, derived from the word “Khajoor” (means Date Palms Tree) is a small village situated along a lake known as the Khajuraho-sagar. It’s situated in Chhatarpur district of Madhya Pradesh, central part of India.
In 1838, British captain T.S. Burt rediscovered the temples. He recorded that he had found what was “probably the finest aggregate number of temples congregated in one place to be met in all of India, and in an area within a stone’s throw of one another”.
In Khajuraho arts, there has been a greater stress of geometric or graphic form of art on angular forms with sharp points and edges, on horizontal, vertical and diagonals.
My subject is the story of this girl. She is a tantrik dancer applying her make-ups to perform & present herself before her admirer who may be her Lover, The Tantrik (The powerful & devotional head of the century who believed Yoga & sexuality works together to reach one closure to God or the tantrik or the Ruler and enjoy the divine peace.
