Kudu tongue surface. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the surface of a kudu (Tragelaphus sp.) antelope's tongue. Covering the majority of the tongue's surface are backward facing scale-like projections called filiform papillae, which sense pressure. The round area (centre) is a fungiform papilla, which contains taste buds. Magnification x140 when printed at 10 centimetres wide.
