Lafayette Benedict Mendel (1872-1935), US biochemist. After studying at Yale University, Mendel obtained his PhD in chemistry in 1893 from Yale's Sheffield Scientific School. He went on to found the science of nutrition, identifying essential amino acids and studying Vitamin A, Vitamin B, lysine and tryptophan. His honours include membership of the National Academy of Sciences (1913), and Sterling Professor at Yale (1921). His major works include 'Nutrition, the Chemistry of Life' (1923). This photograph, from the period 1905 to 1945, is from the Harris and Ewing Collection, which mostly consists of photographs taken in Washington DC, USA.
