Lake Michigan Sunset

Growing up in Michigan means groing up near rivers, lakes and streams. I spent my teen years first on the shores of Lake Huron and then later after high school on the shores of lake MIchigan.
Summer time on the lakes means long days and short nights with some of the best sunsets that can be imagined.
I recently went back to visit old friends and had a chance to go sailing. We started the day out on Lake Charlevoix slowly drifting around the lake as the winds were low most of the day. We cooked up some dinner and made our way out onto Lake Michigan The winds were calm but blowing enough to put the sail up and cruise around and catch the sunset. This is one of the images I was able to capture.
Even though the summers are short, the days are long when yo live on the eastern shore of Lake Michigan. Considering a large portion of the lake is above the 45th parallel and the shore line is the western edge of the eastern time zone the sunrise comes up around 5 and doesn't set until aroung 10 pm. This makes for long days where a young teen can burn off plenty of energy.
Lake Michigan is one of 5 of the Great Lakes and is the only Great lake that is completly within the boundries of the United States.Lake Michigan is the second largest great lake in regards to vloume and the third largest in regards to surface area. The area around the Lake Michigan is often refered to as the third coast. The beaches along the lakes have very soft off white sand sometimes known as singing sand for the sound ones foot prints make as the walk across undisturbed beaches.
