Description:

The lemon was almost always the focus of the still life paintings of the 17th century Dutch masters. Lemons were placed together with other fruits, wine, and seafood. It was a luxurious item, highly prized and considered a symbol of prosperity.
This miniature painting depicts a lemon peeled into the classic spiral as was a tradition among the masters of the Dutch Golden Age. It was painted following their layered painting technique. First, the image was inked, then sepia was used to give it its tonal values, then the 'dead' layer, and finally two layers of colour.
Most of the work in this piece was done under the magnifying glass.
