Dandelions go through life being very under appreciated and only looked at by most as a weed. Meanwhile, we are lucky that the plant grows wild and easily obtainable because it is one of the most important herbs in the traditional Chines, Ayurvedic and Western herbal materia medica The dandelion is a sunny and a bright and a cheerful yellow flower atop a basal rosette of toothed green leaves. It has many wonderful medicinal qualities icluding: anti-tumor, clears heat toxins especially in the throat area, the stems help to purify the blood, cleanse the arteries, promote heart health, support healthy arterial and connective tissues, antivierial, antifungal, anti-inflammatory, contains significant amounts of calcium in the root, vitamains A, C & D, fatty acids such as omega-3, glycosides, inulin, phosphorus, iron, cloine, niacin as well as blood regulating and clot-preventing coumarins especially in the leaves. Its energy is considered cooling, drying & descending and its taste is decidedly bitter, slightly salthy and the starchy root can have a wonderful sweetness. Because Dandelion is so cooling and reducing, it treats conditions that are described as excess in nature: a ruddy complexion, thick coat on the tongue, a rapid pulse, loud voice, biliousness, irritability, pain and cramping are frequently seen in circumstances requiring its use. Pelvic inflammatory disease, appendicitis, ulcers, diverticulitis and many cases of diabetes fall into this category. This is just some of what dandelions can give us. We probably should all consider and try to include dandelions in our diets.
