Buildings on the fringes of the Louvre Museum have balconies supported by this lion and his companions.
Lions have been considered a symbol of courage since Roman times. Caves in southwestern France, famous for its Paleolithic cave paintings, depict lions among other animals. The cave paintings are estimated to be 17,300 years old.
Note the flower in his mane, the meaning of which is not certain.
