Description
This was a practice painting/portrait I did like 20 years ago. Yeah I know, don’t laugh, I copied her off a poster just to see if I could do the hair, leather affects, and the silky lace, I not only discovered I could make it look just like it, I discovered I could make it look better! (even the person). I just created the background from imagination. the clouds are almost like dark wings on her. The rocks that she is resting against were designed to draw the viewer into the background where they are met by a gull screeching at them for daring to look beyond the obvious. The sea gulls were inspired by a famous artist!
I gave the painting to Lisa's mother through some friends who knew her, I thank she wrote a note that said "thank you, it’s very nice" - that’s all I’ve ever heard about it. I stopped “copying” after this painting except for the occasional commissioned Masterpiece reproduction. ( the ones that look impossibly hard to do)
When you’re just learning, copying photos, or other art helps you learn what you can do with a brush or pencil, but the goal should be to “just to learn” so you can “be completely original”!
When I hear comments like ”that looks like a photo” or hear the term photo realism I have to smile, because a photo is just a sketch to be used and surpassed and some of my paintings are very simple they just give the illusion of perfection that no photo could attain. Copying photos real good dose not make a good artist (if you see the shadow from the flash you know it was just copied and nothing original has been created and is how a lot of artists get stuck, they can copy but not create, I would rather see a completely original work of art even if it is child like to some because its art and creative and original.
This photo was very grainy, I worked on it but you can still see how grainy in places.

Van, This has been posted for a while, but I could not resist offering my endearing comments to you about how great this painting is and how inspired as always I am by your talents.... By the way, this looks just like me when I was younger. (NOT)... YOU ARE GIFTED beyond belief...but not just gifted....you know what you can do and you do it. Thanks for sharing your art with el mundo. :-)aew

Wild and excellently done. Thanks for comment at my discussion post " A Friend " about my painting called "Priestess of Flower Temple".

Hi Van, I don't know how do you do this. You must have born with the whole palete of colours encrusted in your brain and heart. Your perception of people and objects that surrounds you is beyond reality, and what you see goes directly and exactly from your eyes to the canvas........ and to top it off , I think you are an amazing person. All the comments you made to artists on this site tells me you are a very nice human being.
