Every photographer in Lisbon Portugal, no matter how accomplished or casual, wants to take photos of the traditional trams! I decided to take some photos at the Miradouro (viewing place) de Largo das Portas do Sol. However, at this place, there isn't much warning as the tram rounds the corner. This is what husbands are for! My husband positioned himself on the plaza (behind where the tram is) and signaled me when one was coming. I was smashed up against a wall on a 12" sidewalk, trying not to be in the way of the pedestrians and also trying not to get run over by trams coming in the opposite direction. That was a fun 30 minutes! The first tramway in Lisbon began service in 1873 as a horsedrawn car. The trams were electrified in 1901-2. The system expanded up until 1959. After that, construction of the Metro and expansion of the bus system caused a decline in the network. There are 5 remaining lines, which still serve an important function in the topography of the city where hilly terrain and narrow streets make them the best transport option. However, because of their historical and touristic attraction, they are often crowded with tourists and lines to board the trams can be long. FUN FACT: I was reading some online reviews of this view point area, and one reviewer called it a 'touristy neighborhood'. Notwithstanding the truth to that, she went on to say that she and her spouse took the work out of climbing the hills, not by taking a traditional tram, but by taking a Segway tour!
