Description
Little town of Bethlehem - nestled high in the White Mountains of New Hampshire is the small town of Bethlehem. For over 100 years, this small town has been a favorite summer destination of patrons such as the poet Robert Frost, presidents, and families (including the Woolworth family of the department store fame) from the New York area for many years due to its low pollen count. As we were leaving the town, we noticed this small shrine tucked away on the roadside. Curious, we stopped to visit. There was a sign at the side of the road proclaiming this:
...To the traveler along this way:
To the weary who would pause along the road to rest...
...To the family or group or party
that would linger to rest and pray...
...to any and all...
...this roadside haven is dedicated...
...With the hope that its beauty and
serenity shall be as a warm handclasp
of a friend to a friend
Caddy Camp Alumni Memorial
Boston Mass
This shrine was dedicated in 1998 to celebrate the thousands of young men, mainly from the inner cities of Boston and New York to caddy for the rich and elite golfers who came to enjoy the golf courses of the region and who needed a caddy. Norman Franzheim apparently developed the first of these caddy camps in the early 1900s as a way to teach these young men about the game of golf and also to give them a way to earn some cash.
As we approached the shrine, we noticed behind the base of the statue was a plastic bag. Curious, we opened it, and it was filled with notebooks...all containing the prayers, wishes and comments of travelers over time. I found it very touching to share in this moment with hundreds, if not thousands of travelers who had gone before us, stopped for a moment's respite and prayed for safe travel home.

Quaint little town-use to be real bustling in the mid early to mid 20th century. Lovely capture Karen/L/F/Tw

Thanks Mike...it is now an artist haven, I think, with lots of antiques and WREN , women's rural entrepreneurial network. Such a scenic little spot.
