Description
Light micrograph of the surface of a leaf of the spider wort plant, Tradescantia, showing a single stoma (oval body, centre). Stomata are pores which provide the plant with a means of gaseous exchange between the atmosphere & the internal tissues. They are held open during the day & are closed at night to conserve water. Surrounding the stoma are two curved lip-like guard cells which control the opening & closing of the pore. The dark spots seen in some of the surrounding epidermal cells are the cell nuclei. Magnification x400 at 35mm size.
