A solitary wolf on a long, lonely search for sustenance. The poem in this version gives an added descriptive dimension. It reads as follows:

With eerie quietness night falls on the cold, vacant plains of the north

A shallow snow covers the desolate landscape and across its undisturbed beauty a faint shadow steadfastly moves

It is cast by a solitary beast, a wolf without companion, a bold loner

Driven by a hunger that has not been satisfied in many days he searches vainly for sustenance in a land that seems dormant and void of life

But he is not deterred

The moon, pouring forth its pale light on the tundra below, cannot reveal a means whereby his fast may be ended

The air he breathes is still and likewise brings no evidence of prey near or far, nor can his ears detect the movement of any other living thing

His senses continually fail to affirm the hope that he is not alone in this barren world

Yet his gait remains sure

Over the horizon promise and anxiety lie inseparably tangled awaiting his presence, with no hint as to which is justified

The distance may bring with it the game he craves, a lethal adversary, or perhaps a long sought after mate; but he is most likely to find only more of the empty field now moving steadily underfoot

Time and effort shall reveal

Presently silence continues its reign over his lonely crusade with neither
suggestion of relief nor loss of desire

The night is young, his hunger unending

And he presses on
