Long Seaside Pier At Southport - England
Photograph - Photograph
The renovated pier at Southport, Merseyside, England, represents a harmonious combination of traditional and contemporary architecture.
Most of what can be seen is the original pier, a icon of the English seaside resort from the Victorian and early 20th century period. A modern, 21st century pavilion has bee added at the end (architect: Shed KM; completed 2002).
At over 1km long, this is the second longest pier in the UK. A tram runs the full length of the pier so that visitors can see the views from the end and exhibitions within the pavilion without too much exertion.
