This is a really powerful and poignant portrait, all the more effective for the faded B&W. It symbolizes the relegation of all the other highly intelligent mammals and birds to a state of isolation and virtual extinction. They are unhappy spectacles in zoos and just murdered for bushmeat or to feed some sort of product market somewhere in the world, when they are in the wild. The loneliness of this gorilla - one of the most peaceable and retiring of all primates - points to the flip side of the coin - the deadliness of Man. Man, now seven billion strong, has completely taken over all habitable parts of the planet, and all other species are in retreat except bugs. Our evolutionary function - we could look at it this way - is to cause the next catastrophic species extinction on this planet. Unlike previous extinctions, we have exquisite capacity to contemplate and understand the destruction we are doing as we do it. I am certainly convinced that this process will not and cannot stop and except for a few lab specimens and animals tortured and killed on species farms, they will all be no more very soon.

Laurie Search replied:

Yes, it does appear to be very bleak for these creatures, doesn't it? So sad. I'm so glad this image spoke to you. Thank you so very much for the wonderful compliment, Arjun! It really means a lot!!! :)))
