Description:

The Portland Observatory atop Munjoy Hill in Portland, Maine is not a lighthouse. It is a marine signal tower built in 1807. With a system of flags it would let merchants at the wharves below know when their ships were approaching, what direction they were approaching from, and how far out they were. This allowed the merchants to have their crews ready to unload at the docks before the ships arrived and helped make Portland one of the busiest shipping ports of the early 19th century.
