Description:
Lord Hats
ARTIST : Paolo Garretto (Italian 1903-1989)
Garretto was an Italian artist known for his caricatures and strong political views. He studied art and architecture in both Milan and at the superior institute of art in Rome. Attracted to Cubism and Futurism, he gravitated to fascism and served briefly in Mussolini 's personal honor guard by designing its all-black uniform. He moved to Paris in 1927 where he was published in several London journals. He mastered the airbrush – which was just coming into use among artists at that time – and was one of the first to apply it to his art-deco inspired caricatures. A frequent visitor to New York, he contributed to Vanity Fair, Conde Nast, Fortune, the New Yorker, and Harpers Bazaar. The advent of war brought visa problems and an arrest as a hostile Italian journalist, deportation back to Europe and cancellation of all his magazine contracts by 1939. Refusing to produce war Propoganda for the axis governments led to imprisonment in Budapest, followed by a forced evacuation back to italy.
