Portrait of the British mathematical physicist and engineer William Thomson, 1st Baron Kelvin, (1824-1907, centre) during his visit to the Schenectady Locomotive Works, Schenectady, USA. In 1848 Kelvin proposed the existence of absolute zero and suggested the use of the absolute temperature scale, which was named the Kelvin scale. He also improved electric cable design, making trans-Atlantic telegraphy viable. Lady Kelvin is on the left of Lord Kelvin.
