Painting - Acrylic On Canvas
This portrait painting was made several years ago under the impression (very common in the eternal and multicultural city of Jerusalem), that classical art of many countries, epochs and escolas represent itself here in many ways - through the landscapes, the people, the sublime mixture of different traditions. As I have written in some other place, you may meet Medici brothers discussing the latest soccer game with Tutmos the Great, near souk Mahane yehuda. Also the city itself makes an impression that it was iterpreted many times by different other cities. For example, the medieval Prag was built according to the plan of Heavenly Jerusalem, and so many great masters of western and eastern art (who never saw a real Yerushalaim) drew and painted their inaginary Jerusalem. So naturally, I see my dear friend and beloved in the same magic and eclectic way.The portrait includes some deeply nostalgic elements, which are strongly connected both to the place of our eternal living and to the places and images of our eternal loveand to: the famous Carlo Crivelli's painting of Maria Magdalena from Rijksmuseum Amsterdam, Caravaggio's vine leaves and cityscapes from the old Prague and the ancient village of Ein Karem near Jerusalem - the place connected with many great personalities including John the Baptist. The season is mid-autumn, that in the Middle East is rather hot and dry, when vine leaves turn reddish yellow and purple. One can also pay attention to the element of negative color I use in many of my paintings - the dense brown of the sky over the ghostly illusive colors of the old town hall of Prague.
