Madonna And Child
Susan Lee Clark
Painting - Watercolor On Archesl
To emphasize the relavance to our lives today, I choose to paint Mary and Jesus using modern portraiture style. I have researched the clothing styles and cloth production of their day, and have chosen a dye for Jesus garment made of readily available wild plant dye,. Mary I have depicted in white, as was common then due to the cotton and wools being mostly naturally white.
The robes of men and boys were often striped, an easy pattern on a home loom, and women did not cover their hair, but kept it tied back or in a bun, not hanging loose as was the custom of prostitutes. Head coverings were mandatory for women in temple, but not for men, although men also had head shawls for prayer.
Most of us are very accustomed to the 13th and 14th Century stylistic depictions of Mary and Jesus, which were common to all portraiture of those times. I hope you will enjoy this painting in today's style of portraiture which is more realistic in keeping to the human form. People haven't changed, but art has become more accurate.
Merry Christmas to all!
