Madonna Of The Street
Tapestry - Textile - Hand Embroidery
Modonna, commonly know as "Madonna of the Street", was originally a painting created by Robert Ferruzzi (1854-1934). The story goes that during the late 1800's, Italian painter Robert Ferruzzi saw a beautiful little girl walking the streets of Venice. It was very cold and the girl was seen wrapped in a cloak and holding a small child to her breast. The painter was intrigued by this image and apprached the girl and asked her to moldel for him. The girl was identified as 11-year-old Angelina Cian. The child was her 1-year-old brother Giovanni (Little Mother).
Although not originally painted as a religious picture, this painting was later popularized as an image of the Virgin Mary holding her infant son, and has become the most recognizable images created by Ferruzzi.
Through a collaborated effort, this piece of work was hand embroidered by my sister To-Lan and several ophans who were raised in a Catholic church in Saigon, Vietnam. All proceeds go to selected Autism charities in VN and the US. Thank you so much for looking, To-Tam
