Description:
Information found on en.wikipedia.org - McKenzie River, Willamette National Forest and Cascade Range
The McKenzie River is a 90-mile (145 km) tributary of the Willamette River in western Oregon in the United States. It drains part of the Cascade Range east of Eugene and flows into the southernmost end of the Willamette Valley. It is named for Donald Mackenzie, a Scottish Canadian fur trader who explored parts of the Pacific Northwest for the Pacific Fur Company.[6][7] In the 21st century, there are six large dams on the McKenzie and its tributaries.[8]
The McKenzie River originates as the outflow of Clear Lake in the high Cascades of eastern Linn County in the Willamette National Forest. Clear Lake is fed by Ikenick Creek and Fish Lake Creek, the latter of which flows from Fish Lake (a few miles north of Clear Lake, in Marion County). Fish Lake's main tributary is Hackieman Creek, which drains the north side of Browder Ridge east of Tombstone Pass. U.S. Route 20 crosses the pass and follows Hackieman Creek. The McKenzie River flows south from Clear Lake, paralleled by Oregon Route 126. It enters Lane County and flows west past the community of McKenzie Bridge. It receives the South Fork McKenzie River about 3 miles (5 km) east of Blue River. The South Fork rises near the Pacific Crest Trail in the Three Sisters Wilderness and flows north-northwest for about 30 miles (48 km) through Cougar Reservoir and Cougar Dam.[9]
After the South Fork confluence, the main stem McKenzie River flows west through a narrow valley in the mountains, past Vida to Leaburg and Walterville. At each of the latter two communities, water from the McKenzie is pumped into a canal where it produces hydropower and is then returned to the river. The McKenzie valley widens as the river continues west, and as it emerges from the mountains it passes along the north side of Springfield into a broad floodplain and joins the Willamette from the east 5 miles (8 km) north of Eugene.[4][9]
The Willamette National Forest is a National Forest located in the central portion of the Cascade Range of US state of Oregon.[3] It comprises 1,678,031 acres (6,790.75 km2) making it one of the largest national forests.[citation needed] Over 380,000 acres (694 mi2, 1,540 km2) are designated wilderness which include seven major mountain peaks. There are also several National Wild and Scenic Rivers within the forest. The forest is named for the Willamette River, which has its headwaters in the forest. The forest headquarters are located in the city of Eugene. There are local ranger district offices in McKenzie Bridge, Mill City, Detroit, Sweet Home, and Westfir.[4]
The forest is famous for being at the center of the controversy between the logging industry and the endangered species status of the Northern Spotted Owl.[citation needed] Environmentalists maintain that the forest was aggressively clear-cut for many years threatening a federally listed endangered species.[citation needed] The timber industry contends that the forest can simultaneously provide lumber jobs and wildlife habitat.[citation needed] Since April 1994, the forest is governed by the Northwest Forest Plan, which restricts, but does not eliminate, logging in potential spotted owl habitat.[citation needed] Despite protest, the forest is still heavily logged and a drive through the region shows many recent clear-cuts.[citation needed]
The forest stretches for over 100 miles (160 km) along the western slopes of the Cascade Range in Western Oregon. It extends from the Mount Jefferson area east of Salem to the Calapooya Ridge which divides the watersheds of the Willamette and Umpqua rivers. Most of the forest (about 61%) is located in Lane County, but there are large areas in Linn, Marion, and Douglas counties, as well as much smaller areas in Clackamas and Jefferson counties.
The Cascade Range (or Cascades) is a major mountain range of western North America, extending from southern British Columbia through Washington and Oregon to Northern California. It includes both non-volcanic mountains, such as the North Cascades, and the notable volcanoes known as the High Cascades. The small part of the range in British Columbia is referred to as the Canadian Cascades or, locally, as the Cascade Mountains. The latter term is also sometimes used by Washington residents to refer to the Washington section of the Cascades in addition to North Cascades, the more usual US term, as in North Cascades National Park.
The Cascades are part of the Pacific Ring of Fire, the ring of volcanoes and associated mountains around the Pacific Ocean. All of the eruptions in the contiguous United States over the last 200 years have been from Cascade volcanoes. The two most recent were Lassen Peak in 1914 to 1921 and a major eruption of Mount St. Helens in 1980. Minor eruptions of Mount St. Helens have also occurred since, most recently in 2006.[1]
