Description
Although I loved every angle I saw of the beautiful cathedral known the world over as Notre Dame de Paris, it was the angle from up river looking at those famous flying buttresses that I loved most. Partially it's probably the architecture geek in me. Those flying buttresses were the first of their kind and were also how the French solved the problem of having the thin tall walls for which French Gothic architecture is known. The rest boils down to this is the side of the church I think is most recognizable. There are many cathedrals with tall twin towers on the front, but this side of the church is unmistakably Notre Dame!
There was something about the quality of the light and the cloud streaked skies in this photo that spoke to me of an old painting, hence the tactic I took with editing it. I've added many painterly layers to create a feeling both of a painting as well as to give it a vintage feeling.
Notre Dame over the waters of the Seine in winter, truly a timeless image..
Note: Notre Dame de Paris is a UNESCO designated World Heritage Site.
