Main-A-Dieu, Nova-Scotia, is a small fishing community east of Sydney in Cape Breton.
As a testament of the regions french heritage, Main-A-Dieu literally translates to "Hand of God". As a further testament of how much this heritage has been mixed with non-french cultures, no one pronounces the towns name the way a french person would.
Rather, people call it "Manadoo", and it's kind of hilariously adorable. The first time I said it out loud, using the french pronunciation of course, the people I were talking with had no idea what I was talking about.
