Painting - Airbrush And Color Pencils On Cold Press Illustration Board
This is one of the first examples of color drawings I have done. When I say drawings I guess I should say drawing/painting. I started like most artists doing graphite pencil drawing, the next logical step seemed to be color pencils.
Color pencils have the same control techniques as graphite. I felt comfortable with colored pencils but still wanted to achieve a look that wasn't possible without some liquid media paint.
I purchased an airbrush and wanted to create the amazing realistic look that I had seen with airbrush work from other artists. For the background I looked at airbrushed art as well as photographs where the background was out of focus.
I masked off the area that involved the deer and airbrushed the background. While doing this I found it helpful to squint my eyes to get an idea of general color transitions. Or basically seeing an out of focus background at a distance.
For the deer I combined airbrush and colored pencils to create some details. On every piece of artwork I do that involves eyes. I put the white highlight in eye as the very last finishing touch. I do this to avoid any smudge marks or dulling of the highlight on the eye. this always seem to bring the subjects of the artwork to life.
I grew up in rural southern Iowa where hunting has always been part of my life. I have hunted deer since I was a young man and admire them for their beauty and intelligence. I still go hunting although In recent years I haven't shot one because they are beautiful and I am getting to old to field dress and do the work involved with processing the deer. I think I may trade in my gun for a camera and focus on photography. thanks for looking at my artwork.
