Description
Painting of a child at an orphanage in Malawi, Africa. A friend of mine volunteers there and allowed me to use a photo taken as reference. I admired the quiet dignity of the child.
Here is a quote regarding the image:
Derrick's image of an MoH orphan was intriguing because it differs from the usual depictions of African children solely as objects of pity and despair. I showed the image to a number of journalism students for their reaction without giving them any background. Who is this? I asked them. Many said it was an African though they could not clearly say why. Some said the image was ambiguous, at points confusing. Is this a boy or girl? The pose is self assured, confident, even jaunty, while the tattered clothes insinuate poverty. The face seems serene or wise beyond the years of the subject. And whats up with that raincoat with a plastic bottle stuck in the pocket? It is an image that successfully portrays how the orphans of Malawi simultaneously wear a mantle of deprivation and dignity.

Inexplicable really, it was one of those special moments, seeing the photograph and being compelled to paint it. Sincere thanks to both you and Rachel. Thanks Carmel.

The photograph was inspiring but when you painted it you brought to life the hopes and aspirations of that child, I am returning to Malawi in a couple of weeks and I can wait to show it in the village!
